Kigali’s Finest; Miss KIGALI

By Steve Nzaramba If the thousand hills, mountain gorillas and the virgin economy don’t do the trick, the amazing beauty of Kigali’s ladies will surely give you a reason to visit Rwanda.

In an unprecedented event, the City of Kigali organized the first ever municipal beauty challenge. The splendor and ostentation characteristic of international beauty pageants came to life in Kigali for the first time ever when 18 year old Cynthia Akazuba was crowned beauty queen after her elegance outclassed 9 other stunning finalists.

Glitz and glamour set the pace of the evening that attracted the A-Class of Kigali on Saturday, 13th October 2007 at the Serena Kigali Hotel for the preliminaries, and on 3rd November 2007 an even more breath-taking display of beauty that at Jali Club gardens in the heart of Kigali.

Despite the pricey entrance fees (between 15,000 and 25,000 frw depending on proximity to the stage), the event sold out and attracted a nationwide viewing, thanks to numerous re-broadcasts on national television.

The First Lady, Jeanette KAGAME, was present to crown the winner and hand over the grand prize. Also present was Prime Minister Bernard MAKUZA and the Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture Joseph Habineza, among other high ranking government officials.

Rwandan songbird Miss Jojo and boy-band KGB (Kigali Boys) provided a refreshing show in the run up to the night’s main entertainer; regional award winning diva, Juliana Kanyomozi.

Miss Kigali Cynthia Akazuba, alongside Runner up Cerise Isimbi, both students of Lycee de Kigali, cruised home in a chauffeur-driven limousine with lots of cash, five star hotel complimentary air tickets and beauty supplies.

The Miss Kigali event follows a flurry of beauty pageants held across the region, where Rwandan girls put up good performances. Reigning beauty queen of the School of Finance and Banking Amanda INGERI emerged first runner-up in the recently held Miss CHOGM beauty contest in Kampala, Uganda while Miss NUR (National University of Rwanda) emerged second runner up in Africa at the Miss Tourism 2007 regional beauty contest held in Ethiopia.
